Summary

Still a source of inspiration for soldiers on the battlefield and managers in the boardroom 2000 years after it was written, Sun-Tzu's The Art of War is the most influential book of strategy in the world, translated from the Chinese by John Minford in Penguin Classics。

'Ultimate excellence lies not in winning every battle, but in defeating the enemy without ever fighting'

For more than two thousand years, Sun-Tzu's The Art of War has provided leaders with profound insights into the use of skill, tactics, psychology and discipline to outwit opponents。 Said to have inspired Napoleon, and used by Mao Zedong and General Douglas MacArthur, as well as many famous business gurus, politicians and sports stars, its ancient words of wisdom provide a touchstone for today's managers and executives fighting their boardroom battles。 This best-selling book offers ancient wisdom on how to use skill, cunning, tactics and discipline to outwit your opponent。

Little is known for definite about Sun Tzu (544-496 B。C。) and his life during the Warring States period after the decline of the Zhou dynasty, but his classic The Art of War has been one of the central works of Chinese literature for 2500 years。

。。more

I have no idea where I got the idea to download this book from Audible。 It was actually interesting and not something I would normally pick up。

Cool to read and some good quotes, but there is only so much you can learn from a 1000 year old war strategy guide。

It's a collection of aphorisms。 The "wisdom" in the book is found in what the reader brings to it, not what he gets out of it。 It is a collection of thoughts in which one can find justification for any strategy they've decided to use。 It's a collection of aphorisms。 The "wisdom" in the book is found in what the reader brings to it, not what he gets out of it。 It is a collection of thoughts in which one can find justification for any strategy they've decided to use。 。。。more

It's hard to rate this classic。 Now I know where to set up camp with my army, how to deceive my opponent, to confuse and mystify him in order to gain the upper hand。 I know the five types of spies。 I know a lot of things I will probably never have to use but enjoyed the journey all the same。 And in the process, gained a little understanding about modern day China and the philosophy that underpins their leader's actions。 Here's just one example: "Begin by seizing something which your opponent hol It's hard to rate this classic。 Now I know where to set up camp with my army, how to deceive my opponent, to confuse and mystify him in order to gain the upper hand。 I know the five types of spies。 I know a lot of things I will probably never have to use but enjoyed the journey all the same。 And in the process, gained a little understanding about modern day China and the philosophy that underpins their leader's actions。 Here's just one example: "Begin by seizing something which your opponent holds dear; then he will be amenable to your will。" I thought of our two Michael's, languishing in prison--what must our government concede in order to get them back? Of course I will support them, whatever they decide--soon would be good--but now see their imprisonment not as retribution but as a form of manipulation。 Much more subtle。 。。。more

The book was short, but it was a fun experience for me。 The words are short but it was powerful, it holds a lot of knowledge and strength in just a few words。 Reading it is like reading a guide on how to survive, create a strategy and to negotiate in every war。 You actually don't want need to be at war to apply the strategies on the book。 Sun Tzu said he can see art in war, the way he has written this made me believe there is one。 But not war that killed millions of life, for me it's the war tha The book was short, but it was a fun experience for me。 The words are short but it was powerful, it holds a lot of knowledge and strength in just a few words。 Reading it is like reading a guide on how to survive, create a strategy and to negotiate in every war。 You actually don't want need to be at war to apply the strategies on the book。 Sun Tzu said he can see art in war, the way he has written this made me believe there is one。 But not war that killed millions of life, for me it's the war that we fight every single day。 Thats our war, and there's chaos in it but there's also beauty。 We always learn to survive to try and not compromise the important things to us。 And we always learn to be more stronger and better every day 。。。more

Ok, so the main reason I read this book was because I was behind on my GoodReads target and I REALLY need to make up ground when THAT Amanda Nepomuceno has pulled ahead of me。。。。。。 While the classics have their uses, the 'wisdom' communicated in the book is basically, know your enemy, know the terrain, have procedure, be cool to your soldiers, and make sure they don't pull a runner on you because that would suck。 The book itself is only relatively enlightening in the same way that The Godfather Ok, so the main reason I read this book was because I was behind on my GoodReads target and I REALLY need to make up ground when THAT Amanda Nepomuceno has pulled ahead of me。。。。。。 While the classics have their uses, the 'wisdom' communicated in the book is basically, know your enemy, know the terrain, have procedure, be cool to your soldiers, and make sure they don't pull a runner on you because that would suck。 The book itself is only relatively enlightening in the same way that The Godfather is predicatable, but still the greatest film ever made --- It was the progenitor of so many others of the same variety。 Now, my eyes are red from finishing three books today and I'm serious considering 'One more'。。。 FML 。。。more

The Skinny: Legendary book on battle that is interesting to read for the historical value and foresight, but otherwise a bit overhyped。The Good: There are many cool sections in here where the author demonstrates great knowledge of battle plans, much of it still applicable today。 The coolest part is when you remember it was written so long ago! You can also read this in a few hours。The Bad: Perhaps I don't have a proper appreciation for these very old books but I just don't understand the hype。 T The Skinny: Legendary book on battle that is interesting to read for the historical value and foresight, but otherwise a bit overhyped。The Good: There are many cool sections in here where the author demonstrates great knowledge of battle plans, much of it still applicable today。 The coolest part is when you remember it was written so long ago!
